Firstly, many/most Muslims regard any picture of Muhammad as insulting, and a caricature poking fun of him even more so. It is needlessly offensive to ignore the wishes of a religion where that wish of itself causes no harm to anyone.
Then, the French President decides to publicly criticise the religious wishes of what is rapidly becoming a persecuted minority.
I'm not defending the people who think stabbing random Christians is an appropriate response. But every religion has its own zealots. Look at some of the loony-tune Christian sects.
