Mystery of the mirrored monoliths: They've sprung up in remote beauty spots across the world, from the Utah desert to the Isle of Wight. But are they bizarre works of art... or something out of this world? MARK PALMER: Soaring over the barren, featureless desert of Utah's aptly named Red Rock Country, the helicopter crew could not believe its eyes. In this rugged, canyon-carved, sun-baked corner, an otherworldly, 10ft 'monolith' was glinting in the harsh desert light. The internet was instantly aflame with theories. Within days, similar objects began popping up all over the world. Were aliens trying to send a message? Or were pranksters merely copying the Utah phenomenon that fascinated the planet?

Glastonbury is the latest location to be struck by a towering monolith - but it remains a mystery as to is behind the structure which features a stencil drawing of a rat, similar to the style used by Banksy. Walkers discovered the large silver structure today on top of Glastobury Tor - an ancient hill linked to King Arthur and celtic mythology. It is believed the monolith was placed there overnight - but sadly it was felled by a gust of wind. It is the latest monolith to be discovered after a similar structure first appeared in the Utah desert (middle right inset) last month, sparking comparisons to the Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Others have popped up across the US, in Colombia, Romania (bottom right), Holland, and most recently the Isle of Wight on Sunday (top right).
