One woman has been shot inside the US Capitol after President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the building and violently clashed with police in a bid to stop Joe Biden's victory being certified - as Washington DC authorities declared a 6pm curfew amid the violence. Violence broke out after dozens of Trump supporters breached security perimeters at the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon with lawmakers inside the House Chamber urged to put on gas masks as tear gas was fired in the Rotunda. The woman was reportedly shot in the chest and is in a critical condition. It was not immediately clear who shot the woman. Police could be seen treating her on the floor of the iconic building. Protesters were heard banging on the doors of the House chamber and yelling outside as police officers rushed lawmakers out of the chamber and to safety. 'We've been given gas masks on the House floor. Tear gas has been used in the Rotunda,' wrote Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly on Twitter. Vice President Mike Pence, presiding in the Senate, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, presiding in the House, were removed from their respective chambers at the first hint of the breach for their own safety. The protesters filled the rotunda, which sets below the dome of the Capitol and is filled with paintings depicting important scenes in the founding of the nation. They also were seen marching through Statuary Hall, the room off the House chamber that is filled with statues of the nation's founders and used for special ceremonies. In the crypt of the Capitol, where George Washington was originally supposed to be buried, police and protesters clashed, fighting it out. 'We now have individuals that have breached the Capitol building. They are in the Rotunda area,' Capitol police said. Trump urged his supporters to stay peaceful, in a tweet that came after they had breached the building. At a rally earlier that morning, he had encouraged them to march on the Capital.

Officer Brian D Sicknick collapsed in his division office on Wednesday and was hospitalized on life support before passing away at about 9.30pm Thursday, USCP said in a statement. The force's union Chairman Gus Papathanasiou told WUSA9 that Sicknick suffered a stroke during the riots yet the New York Times reported that he was also hit by the fire extinguisher. Another official told the Times a chemical agent may have led to his injuries. The deaths of four Trump fanatics have been linked to the riots so far. It was revealed Thursday that people died after suffering medical emergencies. Benjamin Phillips, 50, (pictured left) from Pennsylvania, died after suffering a stroke; Kevin Greeson, 55, (pictured right) from Alabama suffered a heart attack 'in the midst of the excitement'. Roseanne Boyland, 34, (pictured center) from Georgia is reported to have been trampled on by the enraged crowd. It came as the chief of the Capitol Police submitted his resignation on Thursday night after Nancy Pelosi and the union representing his officers called for him to step aside, following the total failure to protect Congress on Wednesday. Steve Sund, appointed to the role in June 2019, will step down on January 16 - four days before Joe Biden's inauguration. His resignation came after that of the Sergeant at Arms, Paul Irving - whose job it is to protect the House.

What isn’t beyond doubt is the vitriol and dangerous words from the (ex) president, who continued to whip his supporters into a hate filled mob intent on the violence that ensued.
