Chief MERCHANDISE Officer: Chris Whitty fans flock to buy bizarre range of novelty gifts from £14 'next slide please' T-shirt to £10 Hip Hop-themed mugEXCLUSIVE: He's become a household name in Britain over the past year, regularly appearing at Downing Street briefings to issue updates on the coronavirus pandemic. And Chris Whitty has developed something of a fan following among the public for his straight-talking, trustworthy and unflappable nature at the press conferences. Now, a range of merchandise has been brought out in appreciation of England's chief medical officer - from mugs to T-shirts, and birthday cards to cardboard masks. Among them is a £10 mug referencing Dub Be Good to Me, saying: 'Hands, face, space, walk jam nitty-gritty; You're listening to advice from Professor Chris Whitty.' There are birthday cards with his face on, with one stating: 'The science is saying that you are one year older' - and another: 'If you've planned anything, unplan it.' And there is a range of T-shirts and mugs with the phrase 'next slide please' in reference to him asking for a following graphic during the press conferences. Deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam, who also regularly appears at the press conferences, has inspired his own range of products from T-shirts to mugs. But Mr Whitty is clearly the most popular, with 290 results for 'Chris Whitty' across eBay and Amazon, while 'Jonathan Van-Tam' returns 59 over the two websites.

The mother said she was "horrified" by her son's rudeness
The mother of the teenager who verbally abused Chris Whitty in the street by calling him a "liar" has confiscated her son's PlayStation as a punishment.
Footage emerged on social media showing a teenager taunting Professor Whitty as he appeared to wait for a lunch order from a street stall.
In the video, the 15-year-old, who has not been named, repeatedly calls Professor Whitty a liar, and adds: “You lie about the Covid-19 cases… stop lying to the TV, man”.
The teenager's mother said she has told her son to record a video apologising to England's chief medical officer.
"That is not how I have brought him up and not the behaviour that I expect from him.
The video really upset me and has left me feeling very stressed and anxious.
"I have taken away his PlayStation, which is the thing he loves the most. I have not grounded him because he is already suffering enough from the lockdown and does not go out as much as he used to."
The 47-year-old woman told the Mail Online her son is quite an "intelligent boy" who regularly watches the news. She said her son is not a Covid sceptic and that he was instead trying to highlight that the struggles of young people are being overlooked in the pandemic.
When asked about the incident at the Downing Street press conference on Wednesday, Prof Whitty said: “In terms of being harangued … the odd young lad showing off occasionally happens.
“I didn’t think anything of it frankly, I was very surprised it was picked up by the media at all, as anything of any importance.
“I’m sure he’ll become a model citizen in due course and hopefully more like Captain Tom, who was the kind of person who I think much more exemplifies the spirit of the UK.”
The footage was widely condemned online. Tory MP Matt Vickers said it was “appalling” that the chief medical officer had been publicly targeted in this way.
“Chris Whitty is doing all he can to help guide us through this crisis and should never be subjected to this abuse,” said the Stockton South MP on Twitter.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the man who filmed Professor Whitty was “pathetic”.
He told BBC Breakfast: “I think that it is ridiculous what he’s doing. Chris Whitty is one of our greatest scientists and his advice to the Government all the way through this had been incredibly smart and thoughtful, and he’s a great asset to this nation.
“The idea that somebody would do something as silly as that is ridiculous.”
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman added: “Chris Whitty is an outstanding public servant who has worked incredibly hard and tirelessly to help steer us through what has been a very, very challenging time over the past year.
“And it is clearly unacceptable that somebody who has done so much is being subject to this sort of behaviour.”
As chief medical officer, Professor Whitty is the most senior adviser to the Westminster government on issues relating to health. He has appeared in numerous Downing Street press conferences alongside the Prime Minister, Sir Patrick Vallance and other health officials.
