Police State?

The Covid police state: 68,000 Britons have now been fined for lockdown breaches including a young man dragged out of bed by cops and an 82-year-old questioned for having tea in a garden

During the pandemic, examples of heavy-handed policing have attracted criticism from parliamentarians, the public and civil liberties campaigners. Cameron Meech and girlfriend Danielle McHugh's Glasgow home was raided after they were wrongly thought to be throwing a party (top left) and Jessica Allen from Ashby, and her friend Eliza Moore were stopped by police as they drove into the entrance of Foremark Reservoir in January (top right). Ramblers were often stopped by police (bottom left) and Floss Knight was cuffed as she waited to buy a coffee (bottom right). At various times during the emergency - and often with nothing more required than a signature from Health Secretary Matt Hancock - the British have been confined to their homes except for a limited number of reasons. But as the vaccine roll-out gathers momentum, MPs, lawyers and civil rights activists have begun to argue that the legislation underpinning lockdown law needs to be scrapped, and the undemocratic way it has been created should be consigned to the dustbin of history.
