I only found out about this the other day.
Filled in the online application.
Got £250 last week.
With a further £1,000 on the way.
You have to be married or in a civil partnership.
Your wife must be earning less than the £12.5k personal tax allowance.
She can transfer £1250 of her allowance to you.
This obviously makes your ongoing personal tax allowance £13,750.
You therefore get a basic rate reduction on the transferred £1,250.
Therefore £250.
You can backdate the claim for a maximum of 5 years.
So £1,250 in total.
They have adjusted my tax code in order to continue this in future years.
