Syrian teenager suing Tommy Robinson ‘seeking at least £150,000 damages’

A Syrian teenager suing Tommy Robinson for libel is seeking at least £150,000 in damages, the High Court has heard at the conclusion of the trial.

The English Defence League founder, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is being sued by Jamal Hijazi, 17, who was filmed being attacked at his Huddersfield school in October 2018.

Shortly after the video went viral in November 2018, Robinson claimed in two Facebook videos that Jamal was “not innocent and he violently attacks young English girls in his school”.

Robinson, who represented himself at the trial, has defended his comments on the basis they are substantially true.

Throughout the trial, Robinson, 38, maintained he was an independent journalist, telling the court: “The media simply had zero interest in the other side of this story, the uncomfortable truth.”

Law is like a lot of things.
Sounds like it is all difficult, whereas in reality it varies between easy and difficult.

Defamation (libel and slander) is about as difficult as it gets. 99% of Solicitors acting for themselves in this sort of action would have a fool for a client.

Proving "truth" as a Defence is extremely difficult. The case of Liberace v Daily Mirror (1959) is a case well worth reading. The Mirror could prove a lot of things that suggested the Claimant might well be homosexual. But they could not prove he was.

Nothing is impossible in Law. But I would be rather nervous in TR's position. He claims his incendiary pronouncements are true. He wasn't there, and has no knowledge of whether it is true. He appears to have produced 1 witness to back him up. He seems to think showing some level of doubt is the same as proving truth.

Of course he isn't nervous. He never is. Despite having numerous instances that other people would learn from.

The irony of a Syrian refugee sending the odious Robinson to the poor house is just far too delicious.

Get your begging bowl out Tommeh, you're gonna need to rinse your thick gammon for big donations to cover this bill.

"At a hearing last month, Robinson told the High Court he had missed the March hearing because of mental health issues caused by being harassed."

He of all people should know about harassment. Good to see he's on the receiving end too.

Unlike Mr Yaxley-Lennon, I do not like kicking a man when he is down. But this shows a fundamental problem.

In 2018, he libelled someone. In January 2019, he was sued in relation to that libel.

After that date, he has chosen to get Divorced in Feb 2021, and various assets have been transferred to the sole name of his ex-wife. Who he still lives with. Which may or may not have been an attempt to Create a Preference. As shortly thereafter (March 2021), he declared himself Bankrupt.

And he claims that he chose to spend £100,000 in casinos after he was sued. While knowing that he could owe someone a lot of money. And that, although he is rubbish at paperwork, he did not bring to Court his Accountant, Books, or discussions with HMRC.

I am not saying he is lying on this occasion. But it is worth bearing in mind that he has multiple convictions and prison sentences for Fraud and Contempt of Court (as well as Violence, Drugs and Immigration offences).

You would think that they could get him on the 100k.
There will be records of withdrawals, from his bank, or at the casino.
Casinos usually have very good CCTV.
It would seem quite easy to prove, or not.

The bit that fascinates me is this.

This man has gone to various Courts (both Criminal and Civil) lots and lots of times.

On almost all of those occasions, he acts for himself, and has an unshakeable belief
that he is going to prove that he is smarter than the system, and that he will be proved right all along.

He loses. Pretty much every time. Multiple prison sentences. Massive monetary judgments. Injunctions. You name it. He's been there. And lost.

And yet he still carries on regardless.

I, like most people, detest the man. But he does have supporters, too. Isn't 1 of them bright enough to tell him this.

He always plays the victim. It's always everyone else's fault.

He has not just conned that poor kid out of money. Or his Lawyers (who I'm sure did this for the publicity, never expecting to get paid).

He has also ripped off the taxpayer. And all his supporters who gave him money.

He probably chose the casino story because he thinks he is clever, and realised that had he gambled it online, there would be records that could easily be checked.
I think that if he could be forced to provide records of his losses, like dates, and how much, he would be f..k.d.
    More perjury, and more porridge.

If this was true, he would produce the letter he had sent to his accountant about this. His letter to HMRC. His record of attending Gamblers Anonymous meetings. Perhaps even naming the Casino. His medical records showing his addiction problem/treatment.

The only thing this does show is that, even after all the transfers to his ex-wife etc, there is still at least £100,000 unaccounted for.

Even if he can prove the casino spend, he is still facing significant charges in relation to spending that money in that way.

Answering questions this afternoon, he said that in a two-year period prior to declaring bankruptcy, he spent around £100,000 on gambling – largely in casinos.

‘I sold a property, received the money and I spent it,’ he said.

When asked if his numbers were ‘accurate’ Robinson replied: ‘I’ve always been a disaster with paperwork and finance from day dot.’

After questions about his tax returns, Robinson told the High Court that he had not contacted either his accountant or HMRC prior to Thursday’s hearing.
