Butler on a 'Boris bike' smuggled £27,000 of organic takeaways at 'cost price' into No.10 for PM (under his real first name Alex) and Carrie Symonds over eight months - and some 'was paid for by wife of rich Tory donor'

Boris Johnson faced fresh questions last night as the full story of the secret operation to supply him with £27,000 worth of luxury food was disclosed (above right). The Daily Mail can reveal the extraordinary cloak-and-dagger operation to send him and fiancee Carrie Symonds freshly prepared meals and hampers at No 10 without voters finding out. Codenames were used for the Prime Minister and the wife of a rich Tory donor who organised daily deliveries to the No 10 back door (below, right). The food was smuggled in after being dropped off by a butler on one of London's rented 'Boris bikes' (left). According to documents seen by this newspaper, at least some of the items were paid for by the wife of the Tory donor. That would appear to be at odds with Mr Johnson's claim earlier this year that he has paid for all his food at No 10.

The findings of an inquiry that Boris Johnson didn't break the ministerial code over the financing of his Downing Street flat refurbishment are widely considered. "Bojo off the hook on cash for curtains", is the Sun's headline on the story.

Stephen Bush, writing on the New Statesman website, says it's wholly believable that Mr Johnson simply wouldn't ask what was going on with the funding.

However, the writer adds that these are not good traits for a successful Prime Minister to have.

The Daily Mail agrees. Propriety matters, it says. If you want to buy something or have work done, you should know where the money is coming from to pay for it, it adds.

Electoral Commission to be stripped of power to prosecute after probe into Boris Johnson’s flat makeover

Voters think Boris Johnson is a "charlatan", a senior Tory and former minister has said in a withering attack on the prime minister following his party's by-election defeat to the Liberal Democrats.

Dominic Grieve, who served as attorney general, spoke out against Mr Johnson after Sarah Green overturned a huge Conservative majority to record a stunning victory at the Chesham and Amersham contest.

Voters in Chesham and Amersham know "what a fraudulent prospectus is, and they have a very low opinion of the prime minister," Mr Grieve said.

"And they consider him to be a charlatan," he added. "And this is I think quite a widespread view among a certain section of the electorate that has consistently voted Conservative all their lives because this is a deeply conservative area with a 'small c'."
