Given that the definition of rock can be somewhat open to interpretation and that live albums are the only way to truly experience how good a band really are, I give you my top 10 live albums of all time.
See how many you don't agree with.
10, The Who - Live at Leeds - Probably the benchmark by which all late 60s early 70s live stuff was judged. Still stands as a great album today
9, Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes - Klaus and the boys smashing it mid 70s at The Budokan. Some amazing tracks and better than their "World Wide Live" offering in the late 80s
8, U.F.O. - Strangers in the Night - One of the best live acts of the 70s and early 80s this 79 album captures their energy brilliantly.
7, Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same - Rock, funk, reggae, soul, blues. Complete Zep experience.
6, Motorhead - No Sleep Til Hammersmith - Original lineup kicking butt in 81s seminal hard offering. Metalheads will love it, others maybe not so much
5, Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous - Pretty much a greatest hits performed live album. Hard Rock heaven as Phil and the boys perform hit after hit.
4, Saxon - The Eagle Has Landed - This was described as Saxons attempt to do a "live and dangerous" reproduction in their own image. Well it certainly isn't. What it is however is a screaming live album by Barnsleys finest. Raw and real.
3, Whitesnake - Live in the Heart of the City - 2 Concerts for the price of 1 as the album features a 6 track live ep recorded at Hammersmith for the Japanese market and then a full Hammersmith concert 2 years later. The main difference was the drummer. David "Duck" Dowle on the first and Iain Paice on the second.
2, Pink Floyd - A Delicate Sound of Thunder - Like Floyd?, You'll love this anthemic march through everything good that the band ever did. Don't like Floyd?, play it anyway. You may just surprise yourself.
1, Iron Maiden - Live After Death (The World Slavery Tour) - 3 sides live recorded on the last 4 nights of the tour in Long Beach Arena and the 4th side containing Hammersmith recordings, this was for many metal/ rock fans the point at which Live albums could go no further. Way ahead of its time and competition in every department it went multi platinum and retains iconic status some 35 plus years on. If you only ever buy 1 hard rock/ metal album this should be the one.
This is simply a personal top 10 and it wasn't until I started thinking about it that I realised that there could be grounds for several others to have got in.
Judas Priest - "Unleashed in the East"
Cheap Trick - " Live at Budokan".
AC/DC - "If you want Blood"
Queen - "Live"
Status Quo - "Live in Glasgow"
Genesis - "Three Sides Live" or "Seconds Out"
All of these had valid claims but in the end it is what it is. Oh and yeah I'm very aware that there's no Beatles or Stones, ones over rated and superannuated the other never did anything decent live.
Let the arguments begin.
