Join and play all future tournaments from the very start,

or

at the very last minute of late registration?

I've often wondered if there was much advantage/disadvantage to either of these scenarios over a large sample size.

Just a few from the top of the my head.

From The Start
Opportunities to chip up from the poorer players before they bust are greater
Blinds are lower comparative to stack sizes so there's more time to pick and choose spots
If it's a bounty tournament. there will be more bounties up for grabs (especially if you can build a stack early)
To go deep in the tournament, you need to outlast more players

Late Registering
Can be much closer to cashing - Does that mean better chance at profiting?
Blinds are higher. If you are more comfortable playing short stacked this would suit your game
Bounty prizes are generally higher by this point
Blinds are higher, so need to essentially win a flip early if joining with only 10BBs or so.

Personally, I always try to play tournaments from the very beginning, but I understand some players prefer to join during the later
stages of late-reg.

What's your thoughts?

Cheers

You missed the most important caveat to late regging - does it improve your hourly in the long run?

    Very good point.

Are there any regular late-reggers amongst the forum regulars?

Like anything in Poker, entering last minute and playing a short stack is a skill set that would probably benefit most in non BH tournaments. Whilst bounties are likely to be a little higher towards the end of late reg, as a short stack you're unlikely to be able to win one until you've built up a stack and you're also gonna get called wider which limits your open shoving/reshoving range. Personally, I like to play from the beginning cos I'm a recreational player so I just wanna play.

    Normally, in from the start.

The only exception was on Stars a while back. They had 5K stacks with a (same price) 50k add-on. Then it made sense to late reg.

I almost always late reg rebuys except if it's a big tourny because i.ve normally satted in every other tournament i start from the begining unless i.ve been busy and i miss the start

Late regging Bounty Hunters is madness, you are effectively excluding yourself from winning some of the prize pool and your starting table will likely all cover you which is terrible.

Late regging satellites on the other hand can be plus EV.

If you are late regging a rebuy because of the potential cost then I would suggest that you are not playing with sensible bank roll management as well as putting yourself at a distinct disadvantage.

    Why is this ?
Your a good player , a different stratosphere to where i am , i'da thought it was good BRM late regging a rebuy with a few minutes to go , having a rebuy then the add on
when the game re-starts you have average stack with possibly a quarter of the field already out , how are you at a disadvantage?

    Thanks for the responses, guys.

I guess for any serious player hoping to gain a steady profit over a large sample size, then playing from the very start would be the most +EV

If just playing recreationally, then there's no real harm by late-regging.

    @stokefc

Regarding rebuys, using addons and the rebuy as soon as you can is a must from my understanding. If you don't get as many chips as someone else, you're disadvantaged due to that fact. And also, that old argument about you wanting most value if you have a hand such as AA vs KK.

You should also rebuy if you bust each time. I remember reading something many years ago about if you decide not to rebuy, you have exactly -100% ROI 100% of the time. There is now zero chance to win anything. Rebuying simply still gives you chance to win/profit, and to at least get a return on your investment into the tournament.

Now, if you are playing terribly or tilty then obviously it wouldn't be wise, but not rebuying because you are worried about spending too much then, as mentioned, BRM is out the window.

I'm not very good at getting a point across without waffling too much, so hope that makes a bit of sense. A more informed user may correct me if I am wrong, but it's at least food for thought.

I don't know if i'm being dumb i wouldn't play a rebuy if i was worried about BRM , the ones i play i could rebuy 20 times and still not be worried about BRM

Sorry, you are not dumb. Probably just my way of trying to explain things.
