I know British politicians are a bit rubbish. Particularly the Tories.

But the flak Dominic Raab is getting is OTT.

Imagine you are on holiday with your family. You are in the sort of job where your Employer regularly has emergencies.

Your employer doesn't provide anyone to cover for you while on holiday. There is an emergency that requires a 3rd Party to be contacted. Even though you are on holiday, you take time to brief someone under you to make the relevant phone call. Turns out the person didn't.

Would you be happy to have people calling for you to be sacked?

I used to take 5 or 6 calls per day on every holiday.
My phone calls never saved any lives.

It only took up about an hour a day, which I didnt consider a huge imposition.
My wife didnt seem to mind.
I had sales teams working seven days per week, so the same applied to days off.
I worked six days per week.
I had a good, well paid job, and was happy to do it.

I think Dominic Raab has come unstuck because of a number of issues.
Firstly because he seemingly couldnt be bothered over such an important issue.
Secondly the government claimed that he had delegated the call to one of his minions.
This backed up the fact that he didnt see it as an important issue.
Then the government had to backtrack and admit the call hadnt been made.
I also think that to have the PM, and his deputy abroad on holiday at the same time is poor management.

I am not sure that the call would definitely changed anything, or saved lives, but I think it is the couldnt be ar5ed bit has got the backs of politicians from all sides, including his own, as well as the press, and the general public.

He claimed that it was a different Taliban, they might have changed, and we would have to wait for evidence of the contrary.
While many people may have been thinking leopards, and spots.
The evidence that they havent changed was obvious to anyone keeping abreast of reports coming from Afghanistan.

Where is the "Special Relationship" now.
Joe Biden doesnt seem mentally capable of continuing as President.

MAIL ON SUNDAY EXCLUSIVE: Raab defied Number 10 order to cut short holiday and deal with Afghan meltdown TWO DAYS before he finally returned

Sources said Mr Raab had been told by a senior Downing Street official on Friday 13th August that he should return to London immediately as the situation in Kabul deteriorated, and that there had been 'much gnashing of teeth' when he delayed his homecoming until the early hours of Monday morning. The claim is strongly denied by friends of Mr Raab, who insist that he was assured by Boris Johnson that he could stay with his family until the end of the weekend. The Cabinet Minister has faced a torrent of criticism for staying on holiday as Kabul fell into the extremists' hands, and for omitting to call the Afghan foreign minister to seek help for translators stranded in the country. The saga has led to sniping at Mr Raab from within his own party and calls from Labour for him to resign, although Mr Johnson has said that he 'absolutely' has full confidence in his Foreign Secretary. It has, however, undoubtedly strained relations between No.10 and the FCO. A source said: 'There is no doubt that Raab was told to come back on that Friday. There was then a significant amount of surprise when he appeared on the Cobra on the Sunday down the line from Crete. He must have nobbled Boris and asked for permission to finish his holiday'.

Many papers also feature coverage of Dominic Raab's appearance before the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee.

The Metro goes with the headline "Raab on the rack", while the Guardian and the online-only Independent focus on claims that a warning about the potentially rapid fall of Afghanistan was included in a report the foreign secretary was given in July.

The Times' policy editor, Oliver Wright, concludes that Mr Raab left the hearing "politically bruised, but without having sustained any killer blows".

That view is mirrored by HuffPost UK's political editor, Paul Waugh, who claims the foreign secretary was heard saying a solitary word as he left the room - "phew".

The Guardian is among those to take a dimmer view of Mr Raab's performance. Its leader suggests his answers raised questions about the competency and judgement of the whole government, saying those in Afghanistan seeking refuge need ministers "who are capable of taking control in a crisis and of taking responsibility for their actions".

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab in yet another Kabul fiasco as it is revealed he left a junior minister to decide about the rescue of Afghan translators while he holidayed in Crete
Dominic Raab says he is ‘working tirelessly’ from his Crete five-star beach resort
Details show Foreign Office minister for Pacific called in for Afghanistan crisis
The details also say Lord Goldsmith had to call shots over translator evacuation

Dominic Raab left it to a junior minister to decide about the rescue of Afghan translators during his holiday.

The Foreign Secretary has defended continuing his stay in Crete as the Taliban advanced by insisting he was ‘working tirelessly’ from his five-star beach resort.

But bombshell new details can be disclosed today of how the Foreign Office minister responsible for the Pacific had to be called in to give orders about the evacuation from Afghanistan.

As the Taliban closed in on Kabul, officials sought direction from ministers on the scheme to rescue Afghans who worked for the British government.

In a submission on August 13 – two days before the capital fell – diplomats requested clarity on how the rules should be applied in practice to those desperately trying to flee.

Despite Mr Raab’s claim that he was working while on holiday, the paper was redirected to Lord Goldsmith.

The minister, who covers the Pacific and splits his time with the environment department, responded with his instructions on August 14.

The revelation that it was left to Lord Goldsmith to call the shots about the scheme to help Afghan translators will increase pressure on the beleaguered Foreign Secretary and will raise fresh questions about what exactly he did do on the weekend Kabul fell.

The Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy was established in April to help Afghans whose lives were at risk from the Taliban because they had worked for the British.
