'Order your Christmas gifts early!' Shipping bosses warn toys and electricals will be hardest hit by logjam at Britain's busiest port with some stranded at sea 'well in to 2022'

Experts have warned the crisis will not be solved until 'well into 2022' and will lead to gaps on the shelves throughout the festive period with shipping boss Peter Wilson urging people to buy their goods for the festive season in a 'timely fashion'. The most popular toys, games consoles, smart phones, white goods as well as chocolate and even Christmas trees are predicted to be in short supply this December with one shipping boss declaring: 'I don't want to sound like a Grinch but there are going to be gaps on shelves this Christmas'. Britain's busiest container port, Felixstowe, has become severely congested to the point that Maersk, the world's largest container shipping company, is diverting its big vessels away from the UK to Rotterdam because the dockside is full and there are not enough truck drivers to pick up and deliver fully loaded containers and return the empty ones. Containers at the Suffolk port are taking up to ten days to be put on to trucks instead of the usual three days while big ships are having to wait up to a week after arriving off the UK coast to dock and unload. Peter Wilson, managing director at Cory Brothers shipping agency, said problems affecting shipping and transport is a global issue but added the UK has a 'significant pinch point around HGV drivers and the demand on them to move goods from the ports'. He said there is a potential that some items may not be available nearer to Christmas, and when asked what items are most at risk of that, he said: 'It's a real mix. We import so much into the UK by container on these shipping lines, so it's from white goods to your Christmas toys, and we include food goods with this as well, so it could be a real mixed bag of all items.

Now unions threaten to hold your Christmas to ransom: Unite plan for first HGV driver STRIKE since the Winter of Discontent - on top of empty food shelves, crisis at ports, no toys and rising prices

The recent supply chain crisis (top-left, a build up of cargo at the ports), which many fear will continue to cause empty shelves into the festive season, has given truckers 'power', the union said. As a result, their representatives are demanding commitments from ministers to provide clean toilets and catering facilities at truck stops as well as a pay rise for veteran drivers, after new starters were offered salaries of £50,000 to get behind the wheel. Unite - whose new leader Sharon Graham (right) promised to operate 'on the edge of the law' to protect members' rights - also wants temporary rules allowing staff to be on the road for up to 10 hours a day to be scrapped. However, Government sources have slammed the proposals, insisting a mass walkout would cause huge disruption to the tireless work ongoing to try and keep shelves stocked and limit food shortages (bottom-left). A Department for Transport spokesman told the Telegraph: 'It would be reckless for unions to hold Christmas hostage and damage the work being done to restore supply chains at this vital time of year.'
