GENESIS Signing off in style. M&S Bank Arena Liverpool Oct 4th 2021

It was always going to be the last tour by the iconic band but as we waited in the rain to take our seats the conversation focused on what level of performance we would be treated to.

Some feared that with Phil Collins confined to a chair and frail, his son Nicholas taking over the drumming duties, that this may peter out into a kind of Val Doonican singalong. As for myself with 45 years of following this band I absolutely had to be there, I just wanted so desperately for my last memories of the band not to be tarnished by a substandard gig.

Well Genesis delivered totally, completely and brilliantly. The light show was as good as ever, the sound was faultless and the delivery seamless.

As for the set list, blisteringly good doesn't do it justice. From the opening "Dukes Intro" and "Turn it On" to the encore of "Selling England by the Pound" magically morphing in to "The Carpet Crawlers", every song was received with huge enthusiasm by an audience ranging in age from 20 to 70+.

All the commercial hits were integrated with earlier favourites from the Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett days to the delight of a packed arena and the one new song Domino taken from the latest and probably last album provided a hard driving rock anthem more reminiscent of a Pendulum or Prodigy track.

After 2 and a half hours the lights went up, the heroes left to the ovation they richly deserved and the occasional tear was discretely wiped from the eye.

A great way to bow out and with only Glasgow and London dates to play Genesis quite rightly take their place amongst rocks greats.

Tony, Mike, Phil, thanks for the memories
Peter, Steve, thanks for the early music
Chester, Darryl, thanks for backing the group live for 40 plus years
Nicholas, good luck for the future.

Pleased to hear they did not disappoint.

    Was "Lamb" in the set?

Incidentally, they did a terrific TV Documentary which was shown a few weeks ago, think it was actually called "Domino". Worth seeing if you can find it somewhere, was well over two hors of music & interviews.

The best in my opinion of the Collins era.
