WSOP waffle, news, goss & Tweets, Day 7 - Hellmuth has a chance of bracelet # 16

Bit of a disaster yesterday, when Caesars entire computer system right across the USA crashed. (Caesars own & run the WSOP).

So a tough day for Tournament Director & WSOP Vice President Jack Effel.

Mr Effel is a bit Marmite, has made a few enemies down the years, but I'm a big fan. He's firm, decisive & authoritative. Exactly what a large volume poker tournament needs. Sure, he makes mistakes - don't we all? - but overall I think he's the nuts.

Here he is in action during that famous "9 high like a boss" hand involving Mr Kassouf.

He got a lot of stick for this famous affair...

    Event #8: No-Limit Hold'em Deepstack ($600 entry)

    This played to a finish, with Zhi Wu from Massachusetts taking the top prize. There was a long battle heads up but just when he most needed them Mr Wu - or should that be Mr Zhi? - picked up the Aces & that was that.

    Hundreds- literally - of unknown USA players cashed, so I'll spare you a list of them.

    4,527 entries, 936 paid - & as far as I can see just TWO Brits cashed.

    392nd - Matthew Hunt, Salisbury GB

    And our friend....

    636th - Atanas Pavlov, London GB

    Event #9: Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship ($10,000 entry)

    After three full days of play, this has been whittled down to just 5 players - including Mr Positivity himself, Phil Hellmuth. He's Billy Low Stack though so is going to need plenty of that positivity.

    1 Ari Engel US 3,485,000 Amazon / 1 / 4
    2 Zachary Milchman Delray Beach, FL, US 1,660,000 Amazon / 1 / 5
    3 Eddie Blumenthal Stoughton, WI, US 1,405,000 Amazon / 1 / 3
    4 Andrew Yeh LAS VEGAS, NV, US 1,105,000 Amazon / 1 / 1
    5 Phil Hellmuth Palo Alto, CA, US 390,000 Amazon / 1 / 2

    21 were paid, & cashees included Dylan Linde (12th), Brian Rast (15th), Robert Mizrachi (7th) & Ryan Laplante (21st).

    Here's the chippie, Ari Engel. Dooobs, who is a fine judge of players of Omaha variants & cashed in 10th in a WSOP Mixed Omaha affair 2 years ago, seems to be a fan of Ari Engel's play & so it looks like it is his to lose.

    Event #11: Heads Up No-Limit Hold'em Championship ($25,000 entry)

    Down to 4 in this, & it looks like this;

    Jason Koon v Henri Puustinen

    San Zack v Gabor Szabo

    £250,000 to the winner, $150,000 to the runner-up, with 3rd & 4th both getting $90,000.

    It's widely held that Jason Koon is the best player never to win a WSOP Bracelet, & he seems generally well respected, so I'm gonna be rooting for him.

    Here's Gabor Szabo, a Hungarian, who may well be the other Finalist. Or not.

    Event #12: Limit Hold'em ($1,500 entry)

    Just 16 remain from the original 422;

    16 Adam Tyburski PORTLAND, OR, US 140,000 Amazon / 414 / 3

    In all, 64 got paid, so 48 have already visited the payout desk. Of those 48, 47 were from the USA but there was one reported Brit;

    58th Paul Sokoloff $2,406

    He seems to play all his poker in the USA & Canada, & has scores of cashes to his name, but none at all in the UK. Here's his Hendon Mob;

    So if he's a Brit, he's an estranged one.

    Event #13: Freezeout No-Limit Hold'em ($3,000 entry)

    Too early to report really, 108 left, but we do have some home interest, including Nial Farrell & Sam Grafton. Note Ben Farrell is there too, but I've no idea if he is related to Niall Farrell.

    9 Ben Farrell GB 607,000 Amazon / 458 / 1

    30 Niall Farrell Glasgow, , GB 330,000 Amazon / 459 / 5

    49 Adrian State GB 212,000 Amazon / 452 / 6

    61 Sam Grafton LEAMINGTON SPA, GB 175,000 Amazon / 450 / 3

    Here's Neil;

    Paul Newey played, he never cashed but did win "Worst Shirt Of The Day". Still, if you are worth xty zillion, I don't suppose Paul cares too much about my opinion.

    Event #14: Seven Card Stud ($1,500 entry)

    261 entries, 76 left, 39 paid.

    I don't see any Brits amongst them, except our friend Mr Sokoloff who plays all his poker in USA & Canada.

    Here's the sort of "Who has won what" League Table;

    Thanks for doing this. After a heads up that lasted ages*, with lots of swinging and swonging, Ari Engel won his second bracelet. Hellmuth went out with a whimper in the first level. I wasn't really bothered about missing the WSOP until the O8 started and I saw Ari was doing well. Might need an O8 reunion next June. PS Did you know pokernews was covering a golden nugget tournament, albeit a hold'em one? Live O8 and the Golden Nugget must be pretty high up on your list of favourite things.

    * I know this as my fire alarm went nuts at 4.30 am. Conclusion was dying battery and not the house burning down.

    @Doooobs

    Ha, no I was not aware that PokerNews were covering stuff from GN. I absolutely love playing there, especially O8.

    You've done pretty well there too, I recall you running 2nd to Miami John for about $15,000. Think that was the one where you struggled to get the tax back? I vividly recall you were down to 1 or 2 BB's or whatever & watching you spin it up.

    I assume the Golden Nugget coverage is a one off, as it is a bigger event (600 buy in, 3 day ones).

    We did a deal heads up, which I just needed to do as it was early morning there and near lunchtime UK time, and I hadn't been out long and was really struggling. I don't think there was a trophy, but looking back the title would be nice.

    The tax was a massive issue, it took the best part of a year, got refused by the IRS originally,I had to resurrect an old bank account for the cheque and pay 400 or so to an agent. Could have saved all that if the Golden Nugget were more helpful. Got there in the end anyway.

    Still, ran very well at the Nugget and I liked it there until the massive ballache, so will probably make a reappearance next time despite the horrendous fees etc.

    @Doooobs

    Ha, reg fees at GN, not unusual for them to be 27%.
