Following the success of last March's 10,000 steps a day challenge which raised over £1,000 for Cancer Research U.K, I have turned my mind to a challenge for next year.
The original idea was to maybe do a long distance path such as the Coast to Coast or a mountain challenge such as The Welsh 3,000s but unfortunately a series of health issues has meant that attaining the level of fitness required to undertake such challenges safely would not be possible within the proposed timeframe.
So whilst riding on a stationary bike at the gym I suddenly got the idea to do a 24hour stationary bike with an initial target of doing 500Km or 312.5miles.
Now as impulsive is my middle name I took this idea away, broke it down, examined the details, discussed the practicalities, the logistics and the training schedule required and have decided its doable.
So I'm aiming for next June, hopefully my gym will allow me to do the challenge from there with even the possibility of live updates / streaming, via a social media platform which I'm hoping might attract a few local sponsors.
Initial training shows that a maintainable cadence for me over 2 hours returns a speed of 24Kmph which allows for a 10 min break every 2 hours or a 15 min break every 3 where I could refuel, change clothing, even power nap if necessary. That of course assumes that the cadence remains consistent throughout the challenge, although having no gradient or weather to contend with is a huge help in that department.
So that is the current plan, everything is in its infancy and as with all things I expect SNAFUs and FUBARs a plenty but hey isn't that just part of lifes rich tapestry.
So I will share the journey, probably once a week or so. The drive you guys gave me last time cannot be overstated and accountability is a great motivator in itself.
Love you all.
Til next time

On yer bike Mark, GL mate.
Consequently I am sitting at home pretty much in a state of petrification as whilst nothing was broken which is great news for me, most of the muscles in my back have taken a bit of a hit.
Went to get checked out yesterday and very happy to be told that the soreness and stiffness should peak about Sunday and to do as little as possible until everything has settled down, couldn't even get out of bed this morning so that's that for a few days.
Once everything has settled down then its back to the bike where so far I'm putting in steady 2 hour sessions on a 2 on 1 off split with light weight training every other day and some swim sessions.
Speak soon folks,
Mark
