Man buys art sketch for £22 in estate sale not realising it's actually worth £37m…
A man was left in shock after picking up a sketch at an estate sale for £22 before finding out the piece was an original artwork worth £37m.
The man, who has chosen to stay anonymous, took a liking to a picture of a woman with a child drawn in ink onto yellow linen.
He had no suspicion that the piece could be worth anything near to what it is, missing a crucial sign in one of the art world's most recognisable monograms, the Smithsonian Magazine reports.
This is because under the main image the artist had signed the piece A.D. in a stylised manner distinctive of Albrecht Dürer, a German Renaissance painter and peer of Leonardo da Vinci.
Now the artwork has been assessed by experts and scholars, who agree the sketch is an original - and conservative estimates put the value at around £37m.
