Ok I'll try and keep this brief, but basically I'm off poker and betting until about March 1st.
Last night after thinking about a communication I received from Church I decided that all the money I have on Sky, Stars, Betfair, Sporting Index and Party, about £250 in total would be pooled with 3 other Church members to provide £1000 which we are putting up as a bond so that one of the homeless families we support can have a proper home.
Other members are going to act as guarantee for the first years rent and this should enable this family to have a shot at normality.
People may say that doing this is risky but hey it's no more risky than playing poker or having a punt.
So I will be active on the forum but not at the tables.
In the meantime stay safe, be lucky and love each other.
mark.

I do, however, find myself wondering why the Church itself isn't helping out, surely it has far more money than individual members? Or is that just for the church roof? (Slightly tongue in cheek and I'm not trying to offend anyone, just wondering why).
My late mother was both a churchgoer and adept at accounts. Consequently, she did the books for her local (nonconformist) Church, and was soon doing various churches, and got invited onto various committees and stuff.
One day there was lots of talk about the fundraising for a new church, in an area of Colchester that was expanding rapidly. My mum explained that there were about 10 local Churches being closed and sold for housing-surely that could fund the new church?
Oh, no, came the reply. The fund for Church sales has nothing to do with funding for new churches. That was the responsibility of the fundraisers/new parishioners.
Think I prefer a lot of churchgoers to a lot of churches
Well done, Mark.
This is simply something that a group of us decided to do as a separate project, however by making it an official project we can benefit from our charitable status and every pound counts.
The ultimate ambition is to maybe secure long term leases on several properties and then use those to give the homeless a chance to turn things around. Having no permanent address is the major stumbling block to people getting access to benefits, medical and other services that can enable them to take back control of their lives.
Like I said, it's only money that I'd put aside to have fun with anyway so it's not a hardship but maybe this time next year it will be the best £250 I've ever spent.
Have a great, peaceful and prosperous New Year filled with love, hope and laughter.
Mark
A great £250.00 spent.
Family are settled in the house, benefits meeting went well, the kids start school on Monday, parents want to look for work and so my work here is done. Well not really, but others will now provide support where needed.
If you are a person who speaks to God just say a quick one for them to prosper and thrive.
Cheers guys.
Family are well settled and the kids are enjoying school. Dad works full time and Mum does part time around the school hours.
They love their lives and even enjoy paying tax on their wages as it makes them feel like they are living like normal people again. So all being well this looks like it may be a success story.
Who knows success may persuade others into doing it again.
