During this break from playing and betting I have been thinking about why I play poker and whether or not it represents a good ROI.
Now I'm not talking about a financial return but more about whether the fun, enjoyment and emotion I get from playing is worth the cost of the buy in the time to actually play and the feelings that the game produces and comparing that with other pastimes that I frequently spend money on.
I can't think of any form of entertainment that costs so little in relation to time spent enjoying it.
Sports, theatre, concerts and even cinema can represent a hefty price tag once travel, food, drink etc have been factored in.
For very modest amounts you can get several hours of fun, entertainment and sometimes decent conversation whilst in the comfort of your own home. You get to decide the setting you're in, when you partake and when you don't.
Yes there's the glittering bauble of actually winning some money at the end but I think if that's why we play we are missing a trick. If we spend £50 going to football / rugby match we accept that we are getting 80 or 90 minutes of entertainment for our money. We have no expectation of winning money or anything to profit us personally.
Compare that to spending the same £50 playing micro / low stakes MTT's. How much more time for your money are you getting, how much more fun and enjoyment and remember that whilst that river card 2 outer has just knocked you out of the £5 comp you're in, don't rage and rant, think about the £50 you could have spent to watch your team lose to an injury time goal.
When people ask why I play online poker when I'm a losing player I simply tell them that I play for the fun and the craic and sometimes just its better than watching tv or doing DIY or going shopping etc.
Going to reload soon, why? simple really, it's costing me more to occupy my time.

Very easy to be negative in this game it sometimes can feel like the world is against you.
Enjoy the buzz of the good runs and switch it off when the tilt monster appears.
Sometimes you are the dog and sometimes the lampost.
Normally feel like the lampost but a few great results in the 7 at 7 and all is good with the poker world and can't wait to play again.
