How this government wasted enough to pay for almost THREE NI tax hikes: Audit reveals £33bn was squandered during Covid pandemic... and the figure is expected to RISE even further when loan schemes data is factored in
More than £33billion of taxpayers' cash has been squandered or lost to fraudsters in the pandemic, a Daily Mail audit today reveals. The astonishing tally - based on Government data - includes £17billion written off in unpaid bounce-back loans, with £5billion of the losses stolen by fraudsters. It comes after the Department of Health this week admitted it had wasted almost £9billion on personal protective equipment, on top of £4billion lost from HMRC schemes. But the mammoth number makes no allowance for either the £28billion Test and Trace programme, or two Government loan schemes that lent out £32billion, because waste figures have not yet been produced for these. It means our figure of £33billion is certain to rise by many billions more.
