Man, 56, who kept a 'slave' locked in a 6ft SHED for 40 years and 'used and exploited' the vulnerable victim is spared jail after blaming his late father

Peter Swailes Junior, 56, from Carlisle, Cumbria, received a suspended jail sentence after he admitted conspiring with his 80-year-old father Peter Swailes Senior to financially exploit the man.

Skim read the article yesterday. Not an expert of slave law although a suspended sentence (I think it was) seems very charitable of the judge.

Karma will bite him and his dad one day though. A couple of horrors those two.

So many sentences handed down by the courts these days , for a wide range of offences seem totally inadequate.

This being one of them by the looks of it. The picture of the shed and some of the words in the article turned my stomach for a couple of reasons.

On the upside the other chap is being looked after by a charity.

I cant get past thinking a jail sentence may have made him appreciate the error of his ways, and been a valuable lesson to him.

On the 1 hand, we imprison far too many people in this country. Compare/contrast our prison population with every other civilised country. It is only the USA that imprisons more than us.

On the other hand, how this guy evaded going to prison is a total mystery to me. I am sure there is mitigation we do not know about. But, even so, that crime was horrific.

I believe we imprison far too many of the wrongtype of lawbreakers. Sure he will get his just desserts in life, starting off, he's not healthy or fit for one.

He's a ratbag and his dad sounds worse. He likely learned it from his dad. Not sure I have came across a crime as unique as this.

If the punishment doesnt fit the crime doesnt it stop being a deterrent.
