Not a fan of the company and use only when required. Not surprised authors will lose out doing business with them assuming that's the case.
I think on this occasion it is about a bit of sharp practice by customers, using a loophole in Amazons current rules that allows them to read the books in full, free of charge, and subsequently return them, depriving the author of royalties, and getting their money returned.

This is the loophole. All to do with laws relating to distance selling.
I'm not a huge fan of some of the business practices of Amazon. But I think it is safe to assume they don't give any money, to anyone, unless they think they have to.
You could blame the particular Law (though without it online sales would collapse). You can blame the less than honest customers.
