Count me out! After just a year, Anne Robinson, 77, has quit as £500,000 host of Countdown amid rumours of rift with Rachel Riley. Here, she tells ALISON BOSHOFF why she has walked away from the show

EXCLUSIVE: Anne Robinson tells ALISON BOSHOFF the reason why she has quit her £500,000 job as Countdown host after a year - amid rumours of a rift with Rachel Riley. Miss Robinson, 77, informed her bosses at Channel 4 on Friday and said: 'I have had a blast - we have taken the ratings up and transformed the guests too. We no longer have northern newsreaders in Dictionary Corner - we have had a raft of top celebrities. But I have made up my mind to quit the show. I only signed on for a year and I have helped them out by doing about 40 shows more than my contract.

I have always found the format of Countdown to be too centred on the Presenters-rather than the Contestants.

So-Presenter (Anne Robinson et al); pretty girl who wants to be Presenter (Rachel/Carol); Person who is clever with words (Susie Dent) who (like Rachel) wants to be the true star of the show; guest who provides yet more entertaining twaddle.

Meanwhile, occasionally they manage to spare a couple of minutes to actually play the game. Before the ad break, the Teatime Teaser, and the clash of egos recommencing.

The format worked for many years. Because of the strength of the idea, and the genuine chemistry between Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman. Who (unlike other configurations) seemed to want to showcase the other's talent.

    Time to end it.
