Northerners.

Northerners with strong accents are discriminated against and considered 'less intelligent and less educated' than their southern counterparts, study finds

The team of researchers from Northumbria University found that those with northern accents were subjected to 'profound' social, economic and educational harm' than their southern counterparts

How very Northern. Wanting a monopoly on hard luck.

Yes. Some accents do give rise to a level of prejudice. But they are not all Northern.

Show me the Northern equivalent of "Essex Girl". Or "Estuary English". Anyone think strong southern accents, like Cockney, don't have exactly the same prejudices?

Seems to be a coalition of non-southerners building up, not all of whom would qualify as northerners.

It's all subjective really. North can mean North of Watford (where most Southerners think the world ends). North of Birmingham, North of Stoke on Trent, North of Manchester on Smack, North of Leeds on Benefits. It could even mean North of Carlisle on Anti Depressants.

    I live North of Watford.

Fortunately, I do not live North of Watford Gap-which is where the phrase originates. That was always the boundary between Southern Softies/Northern Whippet fanciers :)
Watford, Northants. Not the rather larger Watford, Herts.

Interestingly, for us Southerners, Scotland has the opposite North/South divide (with the exception of Aberdeen).

Inverness has a very pure "posh English" accent. Edinburgh/Glasgow etc? Not that difficult. But I have some Cousins in the Borders. And I understand about 1 word in 3 ;)

A cob is a bread roll with a semi/hard crust which we eat quite a bit especially with lobby with lashings of Lurpak

Up here it's a roll, when you go to the likes of Blackpool it's a bap or a barm.
