Rugby League Squad

EssexphilEssexphil Member Posts: 8,780
The England Rugby League boss says he wants to create a "winning mentality".

Picks a 20-man squad (which cannot include players playing outside Europe).

Picks 5 players from Warrington. A side currently in 9th. Lost twice as many games as they have won. Level on points with 11th. In a 12-man League.

There are 5 Yorkshire clubs above Warrington this year. Total Yorkshire players in squad? 4. 1 from Huddersfield, who have more than twice the points of Warrington. None at all from Hull in 5th.

And that is a "winning mentality"?

Why do some sports implement this type of rule?

The reason is very simple. The Australian clubs pay their players' wages. Not England.

There was a compromise reached where the Australian clubs agree to release their players at certain times. This is not 1 of those times. We have chosen to play at this time, accepting it will only be home-based players.

The England Rugby Union used to do the same thing, not sure if it is still the case, but they wouldnt pick players playing in France.
You would think the priority would be to pick the best team.

    You think that is bad?

Don't look at the Welsh Rugby Union's position on people playing outside Wales....

Wales looks likely to be about to lose 1 of their 4 Regional Teams. But, if some player out of work can play for Bristol, he is likely barred. Whereas, if he is unemployed in Wales, he'll be just fine. Really...

You would think the overriding priority would be to pick the best team, rather than holding your best players captive, or disallowing them from increasing their earnings, and possibly playing in a higher standard league.

That's always been the problem with England or even Great Britain Rugby League, they pick on reputation and perceived ability, not on current form.

FWIW, I think this game is meaningless and can only be a lose / lose for England. The World Cup in October comes on the back of full season of the most physical game on the planet.

You need players to rest as much as possible not give them extra games.

The RFL should have started the season earlier, got a 4 week break at the end then used that to build the squad mentality with maybe 2 games against non world cup opposition.

    Aussies will win it
    New Zealand 2nd
    Think England will finish 3rd
France in 4th although if they really turn up they could **** 3rd spot.

    The current World Rankings are:-

    1. New Zealand
    2. England
    3. Tonga
    4. Australia

If you see Australia at 4th place at any bookies, could you give me a shout? :)

    PS-Australia are currently 4/11...

PPS-nice to see Castleford have as many in the England Squad as on Love Island ;)

I have never even seen a minute of Love island but going on what my daughters tell me I have more chance of getting on that than Australia have of not winning the World Cup.
