Not into politics as such however had picked up on a couple of things and maybe seeing it wrong.
Sunak looked actually quite smug when the question was asked in the first link. That also could be a personal trait/face he pulls when asked a difficult question too though.
From what I understand politicians at this level are used to "debating chambers" and have that skill-set that the general public do not have.
It's a little like 'well, technically that is not correct and here is a diversion'.
To me, they are masters of the mealy mouth and are look over there merchants. Really have little time for many politicians. They are generally unrelatable and cannot relate to public.

The even sadder fact is that a significant proportion of the electorate are stupid.
That is why politicians of all parties do stuff exactly like this. Because it works.
