Crypto for beginners

After losing a "fair" bit recently like 99% of others i thought i,d try and learn something from my mistakes
I,ve watched a fair few videos now and read some stuff but haven,t understood half of what i,m hearing.
So i am going to start with some simple questions and see how it goes
Where should my crypto (whats left of it ) be stored?
It is currently on Coinbase mainly in 2 different coins. I do find Coinbase easy to use.
But how do i know my crypto is safe if i don,t need the 16 word passcode to acces it?
