Village fury as Tory MP 'runs over £1,000 cat... and drives away': Thugs smash windows and throw eggs at Tobias Ellwood's home after he is accused of hitting Bengal moggie and leaving it for dead

He was hailed a hero for trying to save the life of a stabbed police officer during the Westminster terror attack. But now Tobias Ellwood is in disgrace with his own constituents who claim the Tory MP ran over and killed a cat (left) - then drove away without stopping. The drama began when Mr Ellwood (right, with wife Hannah) was driving along the narrow lane leading to the village (inset) where he lives with his wife, Hannah, and sons. His car is said to have hit the male Bengal cat, whose horrified owners, the Hawa family, were left cradling their dying pet as the MP drove off. Police became involved after windows at Mr Ellwood's £1million converted barn were said to have been smashed with a croquet mallet and eggs thrown at it soon after the incident.

Does a £1,000 mogi make it more important than a 5 bob one ?.

Perhaps the owners should take some responsibility for allowing the cat to roam free. If I were to let my dog out on it's own the Police would soon be knocking on my door.

Are you serious? have you ever tried controlling a cat, maybe the driver should just take more care.....

I misread this and thought the moggie had a £1k price on its head & they were annoyed he failed to stop and collect the reward...

Have you ever heard of indoor cats or building a Catio so the cat can still go outside but be safe ? It's the same when Tiddles goes missing, what do owners expect when they let them roam free, if you're gonna have a pet then it's your responsibility to look after it. And of course cats don't just run out in front of cars leaving the driver very little time to avoid the cat. Do you think he deliberately hit the cat ? Of course he didn't it's just an unfortunate accident that happened, that doesn't warrant the actions that followed.

Keeping any animal in a cage is just cruel.
I've had cats for nearly 40 years and i accept the risk of them wandering.

Cats & dogs are totally different animals.

Cats have a right to roam. Dogs do not.

If your car hits a dog and kills it, must stop and report it to owner or police. No such duty when hit a cat.

There was talk of licencing Cat's same as Dogs & having them chipped.
I have Ozzie the Dog but did have three cats some years ago.
They were all different Characters, two would stay close to home while one would cross the road and venture few streets away. Sometimes it would be away for days and did think someone was feeding it. Unlike Dogs, cats will go where their creature comforts are and limited loyalty. Was told, when they run across the road they can't turn their head to look, so it's Geronimo.

I know the different rules regarding cats and dogs and the rights to roam as cats are classed as wild animals. I agree with Vespa as he accepts the consequences of letting cats roam free, but where in law does it state that you can smash/vandalise a persons property when something like this happens.

Mixed Emotions when your pet dies or gets killed run over by a car.
Road Kill is out there not just for cats & dogs but all wild life in our fields & forests.

    Absolutely nowhere.

But, for example, it was my neighbour who had run over my last cat and never told me, then, regardless of the legal position, we are going to have issues...

PS-"thugs" aren't noted for attacking property with a croquet mallet round my way :)

    Certainly not.

Far fewer £1,000 dogs, too. Since they banned pitbulls ;)

Would the vigilantes have acted in the same way if it was Joe Public who had hit the cat?
