Nick Kyrgios: Wimbledon fan to take legal action against Australian.
A fan who Nick Kyrgios said was "drunk out of her mind" during the Wimbledon final is taking legal action against the Australian tennis player.
Kyrgios, who lost the final to Novak Djokovic in July, said the woman looked "like she has had about 700 drinks" as he complained to the umpire about her.
Anna Palus has now instructed solicitors to bring defamation proceedings against Kyrgios.
She accuses Kyrgios of a "reckless and entirely baseless allegation".
"Not only did this cause considerable harm on the day, resulting in my temporary removal from the arena, but Mr Kyrgios' false allegation was broadcast to and read by millions around the world, causing me and my family very substantial damage and distress," Palus said in a statement from solicitors Brett Wilson LLP.
During the match Kyrgios said: "She is distracting me when I am serving in a Wimbledon final... she is drunk out of her mind in the first row speaking to me in the middle of the game, so kick her out... I know which one she is, its the one who looks like she has had about 700 drinks... she is talking to me in the middle of the point every time I get the ball."
Palus, who attended the final with her mother, added: "I am not litigious, but after much consideration I have concluded that I have no alternative but to instruct my solicitors to bring defamation proceedings against Mr Kyrgios in order to clear my name.
"The need to obtain vindication and to prevent repetition of the allegation are the only reasons for taking legal action. Any damages recovered will be donated to charity.
"I hope that Mr Kyrgios will reflect on the harm he has caused me and my family and offer a prompt resolution to this matter. However, if he is unwilling to do this, I am committed to obtaining vindication in the High Court."

I hope she loses. Not a fan of Kyrgios. Even less of a fan of people who talk while people are trying to concentrate, and claim they have "no alternative" but to sue.

Last year, a woman went viral at the 2021 US Open Tennis Tournament for her beer-chugging capabilities, and it appears she’s at it again this year.
At the 2021 edition of the esteemed tennis tournament last year, a television camera panned to a girl in the crowd who immediately began chugging her beer as soon as she realized she was on camera – much to the delight of the crowd and social media.
The next day, however, she proved it wasn’t just a one-off event. When the cameras found her in the crowd once again, she once again reached for her beer and chugged the entire thing on camera as the crowd cheered her on.
At this point, she’s become well known for her beer-chugging abilities, so when the camera found her again in the crowd as a spectator at this year’s US Open, she was prepared and knew exactly what to do – chug a beer.
The video has since gone viral, with plenty of people reacting to the girl’s antics on Twitter.
But some tennis fans were not quite as enthused or impressed by the girl’s chugging ability.

Are you promoting binge drinking?

Why are we “proud” or impressed by someone chugging a warm beer in a plastic cup? This is called binge drinking and it occurs on almost every college campus. It’s not healthy, it’s not impressive, and it’s certainly not role model material for young sports enthusiasts.

Wow so you don't care about pushing irresponsible binge drinking? Good job @usopen

Totally agree. It's like @usopen is trying to sell their sport as "where pretty girls get drunk" instead of the merits of the game and its players. Is this pandering to the demographic who isn't into Serena 24/7 coverage? (Serena is the GOAT, BTW.)
For better or for worse, it looks like we have ourselves a new tradition.
She's not thought it through ....
He's made his career on the back of exactly that.
Also, as an aside remember when you had to give order when watching darts? How much better is it now we have all singing, chanting fans. I think Tennis could well be enhanced by crowd participation, if only to mask that fkn awful grunting.
