in the strictest sense could this be classed as theft?

So random one me and my girlfriend were headed out when randomly we saw a bedside chest of draws with a hand written note saying free to take left outside a house.

As it just so happened we had been meaning to sort out getting a bedside chest of draws for some time but had never got round to it so we took it. obviously no one would pursue any action and the police would not bother but just curious in the strictest sense of the law would this be deemed illegal to take?

If it's in the front yard then there is the question of being on private property with the intention of removing items. If it's on the street then you snooze you lose yeah lol :D:D

Common in Australia (no note) required, not so here hence the note " Please take "
Sister lives in Perth West Australia we talk on Skype she said, they lost their nearly new Lawn Mower while her son was cutting the grass and went for a wee. Viewing the Security Camera someone driving by shoved it in the back of his van drove off. They couldn't see the Reg number... we live and learn.
