    They both got 6 year prison sentences for child neglect. Plus additional penalties in relation to animal cruelty.

    PAUL BRACCHI: This feckless couple claimed £84,000 a year in benefits, but barely spent a penny on their children found in squalor... No wonder the judge who jailed them demanded: How on earth was this allowed to happen?



    PAUL BRACCHI: Gemma Brogan (left) lived with her partner Christopher Bennett (right) and eight children in a detached house in 'genteel' Eastbourne. Every month, £7,000 - courtesy of the taxpayer - was pouring into that household; that's £84,000 a year, more than triple the average salary in Britain. Much of the benefit windfall is understood to have been made up of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) payments for five of the children who had received a diagnosis of autism. Barely a penny, though, was spent on them. One little girl was found lying asleep on a sofa in a filthy condition wearing just a nappy. She turned out to be seven years old. Next to her was a dead dog, while 35 other dogs (Yorkshire Terriers, Border Collies, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels) were running loose in the three-bedroom property.
