But an Australian mum and nurse was left gobsmacked after her 11-year-old daughter came home from school ready to impart her new-found knowledge about sex.
And it didn't end there, with the youngster even questioning her 13-year-old brother about 'boners' before he clapped back with the perfect response.
The mum, who goes by the name The-spicy-mum on TikTok, took to the platform last week to tell her followers about the encounter.
"So I got to experience another moment of 'Holy s--t, you're a mum to a teen," she began.
"My 11-year-old daughter is getting the puberty talk at school, and that's fine, we are pretty open, we can talk about that stuff. I'm a nurse, so bring me your questions.
"But she looks at me in the car while I'm driving home and says, 'Mum, do you know boys get wet dreams?' And I'm like, 'Do they honey?'"
"And then she proceeds to look at her 13-year-old brother, who's going through such an awkward stage of life and says, 'So when you see at attractive girl, do you just get a boner?'"
The woman admitted she didn't know "what to say to that," and while she felt for "the poor kid," she still found it "hilarious."
But the awkward exchange wasn't over yet.
"She then proceeded to question him and say, 'So in the morning you wake up with a boner?'. And he so swiftly and confidently turned around and said, 'It's called the morning wood.'
"I love having kids, they're hilarious," she ended the video, which has so far been viewed 874,000 times and racked up more than 104,000 likes and more than 1000 comments.
