It comes after i revealed how EDF sent members of its ‘Revenue Protection’ team to investigate a vulnerable woman who has cut back on the energy she uses because of rising bills.

Victoria Whiteman, 25, from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, cut the cost of her gas and electricity bill from around £115 a month to around £65 a month by turning off lights and her TV and barely using her heating in recent months.

But she said she felt “humiliated” after EDF engineers turned up at her door to see if she was “tampering” with the meter, quizzing her without showing identification before asking a neighbour personal questions to confirm her answers.

EDF said the investigation was launched as Ms Whiteman’s energy usage was “dropping continuously” but confirmed that no tampering had taken place.
