Major books should come in 2 forms-original, and updated/modern.
I get that there are times when people want the original wording. Similarly, people want to be able to buy books for their children that do not contain outdated and/or offensive language.
English is a living language. It changes over time. And people should be able to choose whether they change with it.

Dont you think it would be better to teach children that attitudes have changed, and that what used to be acceptable is not any more, and the reasons why? Is updating stuff to what is acceptable today pretending it didnt happen? If you have groups of people expressing opinions about what may be unacceptable to someone. including pygmy tribes in the Amazon that dont watch telly and cant read, very little is safe. However much we update stuff, we cant get away from the fact signs in Guesthouses that said No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs, were accepted in this country.

Yes, I do. Which is exactly why the 2 different versions can be used as a teaching aid. The School Library Association also suggests a sticker, saying "This title contains content of its time which may offend." Which seems entirely sensible to me.
I don't hold with judging people on the standards of today. Neither do I believe that someone's craft should be judged purely by their beliefs. Some of Roald Dahl's incidentally, were disgusting. He was proud of his antisemitism throughout his life. Doesn't mean he didn't write some great books (as well as some rather repugnant ones).
What exactly do you mean by "groups of people"? If you mean those people who seem to get offended on behalf of just about everyone else, I agree with you. However, if it is the people who get downtrodden yet again, then I am with them.
British (particularly English) people did things that were the norm at the time. Which are terrible today. Can't airbrush history. But also cannot judge people to today's standards.
However, it is important to remember that, without judicious updating, some books simply die. Take the books of Dennis Wheatley, for example. Remembered by some for the roughly 3 Black Magic books (out of about a hundred) that he wrote. Should be remembered for the marvellous Roger Brook historical spy thrillers. But lots of his books have been out of print for decades-simply because his language in relation to Africans was hopelessly outdated and (today) offensive.
