A video has emerged of the final minutes of a 'medieval football' game played each year on Shrove Tuesday - one of England's longest traditions - descending into a violent end outside a betting shop in Atherstone. The 823rd Atherstone Ball Game took place in Warwickshire yesterday afternoon, where players fight over a large ball with the single objective of retaining it. The only rules of the game, which originated in the 12th century, are that the game is restricted to Long Street, and that you mustn't kill anyone.
ah wondered about that I got sent that video loads on whats app, with the title 'Celtic fans trying to get a tenner on Rangers getting a penalty on Sunday"
Today one man at the centre of the violence can be identified as Reece Johnston, a 23-year-old labourer from the town of Atherstone where the annual game is held. With his distinctive orange trousers Johnston can be seen punching and kicking other players in the doorway of a betting shop. Rather than be shunned by his local community, Johnston was described by locals as the 'most valuable player' in the historic game. And his parents have told how they are proud of his competitive performance.

That it seems is acceptable as "Tradition" even to the Mayor. Yet if football casuals go at it with each other, it's fines, jail and criminal records.
Talking of which it's Millwall at home on Saturday, bet they don't show.
