Let's just look at Holly Willoughby's story for a second.
Her best friend has been living a lie for many years. Outwardly, happily married to his wife, and 2 daughters.
Then he comes out as gay. Persistent rumours that this was because of his fear that he was to be "outed", and that some form of Court injunction was involved. He had clearly being lying to a lot of people for many years-certainly his wife and via various public pronouncements. But Holly ignores all of this, and publicly supports what are (clearly) lies. May be all sorts of reasons for that-not least lying to himself-but they remain lies. Which Holly has no problem with. And has never mentioned whether or not she knew he was gay.
Then there is the workplace affair. A man in late middle age is seen on various social occasions with his young junior male colleague. Yet again, his "best friend" turns a blind eye.
Then that young man proclaims his undying love for Schofield at a public awards ceremony. Again, his best friend says nothing.
Then there is an investigation in relation to whether there was an inappropriate relationship. Again, silence.
Then the young man is quietly shunted into a new role, nowhere near Schofield. Again, nothing. You might have thought a "best friend" can work all this out, or at least has deliberately turned a blind eye.
Finally, Schofield feels compelled to resign. Whereupon his "best friend" stabs him in the back, and makes it all about her.
The whole thing reminds me of that more recent Partridge series where he was a presenter on the equivalent of The One Show. Fair play to Steve Coogan for ripping into what is almost certainly a situation and set of personalities very close to real life.

I'm really glad I don't have friends like that...
