I've got mixed feelings about this. Collecting medicine and food shopping for those less able seems like a good job for a volunteer. Any marketing drive to encourage sign-ups is a good thing. With that said, I don't like the Tory government's push towards volunteering for every public service (albeit the country is broke).
I'm also not clear how this will achieve "freeing up space on congested hospital wards by providing support in the community which allows patients to be discharged more quickly". Maybe I'm missing the point here, but if somebody is in hospital for an extra week because they can't do an Asda run, that's a real problem for our society.
