How relevant is memory to success in poker?

DoublemeDoubleme Member Posts: 2,274
So I believe my girlfriend will become absolutely dominant at poker due to her having an insanely good memory. she does not have much confidence though. and other people have suggested memory is not actually that relevant to succeeding at poker.

To be clear very few people if anyone will be capable of learning GTO, maybe some exceptional person can maybe they cant. but learning rough approximations surely will be based on memory and practice and so a good memory would give someone a significant advantage surely?

I mean when i consider how much of GTO I have memorized it is a tiny amount I probably would not even be in the single percentage points for the amount I have learned.

yet that tiny slither results in me been profitable maybe not what anyone would call good maybe some would call it good but that tiny sliver makes me profitable.

surely having a better memory is a big aid otherwise why do people ever study this game if memory makes no difference then and it all has to be innate then why study at all?

Am I wrong to believe in memory?

Memory will certainly help. Deductive reasoning, tilt control and exploitative adjustments are more important IMO.

You could memorise every single solver output and still not crush, if you don't understand why the solver takes the line that it takes and what that means for your strategy when your opponents deviate.

It would be interesting to know what Magnus Carlsen's memory is like. I suspect it's strong but not world memory champion strong.

Hmmm. Memory is a complicated beast if you think about it.

We have recollective memory which allows us to recall things we have seen, read and experienced and call upon those memories to solve problems, answer questions and generally navigate through life. This is obtained through the ability to absorb, store, regurgitate and transmit information.

We have muscle memory which we use instinctively in certain situations and enables our body to react in a reflex way, usually to preserve itself. This is obtained through hours of repetitive training and conditioning.

Some people have eiditic memory. The ability to remember everything that they have ever seen, although it often falls into separate categories such as faces, text, numbers etc.

When learning GTO for poker or immersive study to play any game I'm not sure whether a good memory is particularly advantageous compared to say a good knowledge of tactics, probability, statistics and odds.

That reminds me I have a sudden urge to play Magic The Gathering. Oh happy memories.
