Various reasons. It costs a lot of money. It is 40-odd years old. It is not British-it is American. We could never ever use it without permission of the USA.
Despite the above, it remains broadly popular with voters. And the current/official Labour position is to keep it. Many of the dissenters are the sidelined hard left, still dreaming that Corbyn was in any way relevant.
Should it go? IMHO, probably. Is it going any time soon? No. Simply because both major Parties are in favour of retaining it.
Is this a case of the Daily Mail's "Project Fear"? Of course.
However whether trident specifically should exist I do not know because I do not know what other nuclear capabilities we have if any etc.
