My two sisters work in the library service. They have never been assaulted, but the antisocial behaviour has been high ever since Tory austerity closed all of the options to people. Drunks, drug use, self harm on site and aggressive behaviour are common. I would not want to work anywhere today that involves dealing with the general public.
Drink, drug use, aggressive behaviour and violence are so common now that surely it's time to overhaul the security companies rules of engagement.
After 30 years in the business I became totally pi55ed off that, security staff, doorstaff, parking wardens, enforcement staff etc were expected by business and the majority of the public to tackle such issues at source.
Great idea. however the tools and the rules required to effect such an undertaking are denied by those who claim to serve the public interest.
I'll give you a basic instance. Druggy Bad Boy is kicking off on the Police who immediately place him in cuffs for their and his protection. Druggy Bad Boy is kicking off on door staff who have to try and restrain him for their own safety and the safety of other members of the public but have to use hands and arms only as using a tie wrap or a pair of cuffs is illegal. Even putting him on his arsenal and sitting on arms and legs, and believe me if he's on coke or phet, that's the only way you're keeping him down, until the Old Bill arrive, will see you invited to a little Q+A session with the local Inspector.
Same with store security in shops, no point doing anything because all the power is with the perpetrator. Citizens arrests by and large require multiple willing participants to be effective, the slightest injury to the criminal will result in charges against the good guys and it's just not worth the hassle. I tackled one a couple of years back, only because in his haste to leave the store he ran into my wife knocking her to the ground. After effecting a great spear tackle I was unable to stop my momentum and drove him into the racking and then as he went down I dropped 22 stone on top of him. Awww poor baby.
I ended up having to justify my actions to the police, the store didn't want to help ("too much hassle mate") and the guy wasn't charged with any offence despite knocking a 55 year old disabled woman off her feet.
If you want outside agencies to do the police's work for them on the cheap. Most door staff still get minimum wage, security staff ditto, enforcement are usually salaried but it's not great, then give them effective tools to do the job.
Parents can't smack Teachers can't discipline Police can't touch them There's no accountability
People wonder why the country has gone to h3ll in a handcart.
its all about poverty man, lift the poor outa desperation, then most of it stops, might not help with the nutters on drugs or booze, but poverty is a huge underlaying cause of disorder, drug use and booze use too, imo.
I like the fact that parents cant smack their kid, parents should engage with their kids in positive ways and forster relationships based on respect and understanding, instead of indimidation, obiedience or fear. one time i think smacking should be allowed is when the kid has put itself into danger, like hand in the fire, or went to run onto a busy road, sometimes the hurt sends the right message, but i am against smacking kids in general.
Its the same with teachers, bad teachers get a lotta grief, good teachers engage in ways that unruley kids tend to respect, sure there are moments with out bursts, buts thats life in general.........we need to fund education better, and find better ways to engage the youth in learning.
the police have so many bad officers, i am glad they have rules to follow as well, positions of power should always be held to high standards because the abuse of power, which happens everyday is well outa order.
I did not know that that security staff are so restricted. I remember my first job in a supermarket 25 years ago and the lads used to chase thieves down the road. If they were small and lacking pace, we used to get them. Big and off their face, unsurprisingly they were too quick for us..
My dad's first job as a junior office clerk, he and a couple of others were asked to escort the manager to the bank with a week of takings. They were given a cosh, told to sit in the back of the van and come out swinging if something was up. No doubt they would be in serious trouble today if they needed to come out swinging.
