Remember as well that nearly all benefits are paid net of tax. So the government trotting out the excuse that those in receipt of benefits aren't contributing are wrong because tax is stopped at the payment source.
True. But it goes deeper than that.
That is just income tax. Still have to pay VAT, Inheritance Tax deducted from various inheritances, there are various "flat" taxes where all pay the same (like TV licences), and a whole host of other taxes.
It is true to say that some people pay more tax than others. But the starting point for any tax system has always been-
From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.
