The Kings Speech is already being leaked, and will include plans to increase sentencing for various offences. While, of course, not increasing capacity in our prisons.
But, perversely, an interesting change has just been made (on 28th October 2023) by invoking a clause in a 2022 Act. Which radically reduces the time before a Conviction becomes "spent", meaning people have to disclose the Conviction when applying for jobs, insurance, etc.
So-for example, the time period for disclosure for a prison sentence of 2.5-4 years has gone down from 7 years to 4 years. For a prison sentence of 6-12 months, gone down from 4 years to 1 year. And, most disturbingly of all, prison sentences of over 4 years (which were never previously "spent") have been changed so that crime that does not involve violence, sex or terrorism is now spent after 7 years. A massive boost to conmen and fraudsters everywhere.
Please note that there are exceptions for this rule, for jobs where "enhanced" checks are necessary.
Soft on crime. While pretending to be the opposite.
