How he was allowed to get away with what he did beggars belief. At some level, there was clearly a lot of people willing to turn a blind eye to a prolific sex offender. Some of them were undoubtedly naive. But not all of them.

Then later there were the grooming gangs. A network of men (primarily, but not exclusively, Asian) who saw that the disadvantaged children could be ruthlessly exploited in a similar fashion. And no-one dared grasp the nettle and listen to those kids. Primarily 12-16 year old girls, rather than 8-12 year old boys. But terrible all the same.

Why did it happen again? The Far Right seem intent on blaming Race. Whereas, in reality, it was just a different way of abuse-people working together, rather than acting alone. Doesn't make it any better-or any worse.

Could fear of appearing racist have delayed the uncovering of this? Probably. But only 1 of the factors. The other ones being primarily what had happened before, coupled with the lack of attention paid to the living conditions of the disadvantaged young and an unwillingness to believe anything they said.

This sort of lazy journalism annoys me.

Britain doesn't get to decide international law. It doesn't get to choose whether someone is British or Pakistani.

Let's turn it round. Suppose some guy had English and Pakistani roots. Dual nationality. Had chosen, along with his family, to live in Pakistan for the last 20 years. Carried out various paedophile acts in Pakistan, on Pakistani kids.

How would you react if Pakistan said-we've decided this guy is no longer Pakistani. We've revoked his citizenship, so we are shipping him to England, because we have decided he is really English. Regardless of what he says. And regardless of what the UK say.

You would be outraged. As indeed would I.

But that is exactly what has happened. Being a nasty, depraved man doesn't mean he magically changes nationality.

If he was not British, we could get rid. But he is.

The reason it happened was because the man had never taken Australian Nationality. That's why

As he hadn't his Nationality was only British.
