Top Rock Drummers Of All Time.

TheEdge949TheEdge949 Member Posts: 5,686
Good afternoon.

I thought lets post something that will create debate, controversy and possibly mild outrage without being too serious. So following on from quite a lively exchange of opinion on a certain social media platform here are my PERSONAL top 10 rock drummers of all time.

Yes it's a veritable minefield as many deserving skinsmiths do not make the list including the drummers of my 2 favourite bands of all time McBrain (Iron Maiden) and Ulrich (Metallica). There are no drummers from punk although Topper Headon (The Clash) and Tre Cool (Green Day) could have strong claims.

I selected on several criteria such as originality of style, creativity, the ability to fuse sounds and the influence that they created for future drummers.

See how many you agree with or disagree with. Here we go.

Neil Peart - Rush. Probably the most technically gifted drummer ever.

Keith Moon - The Who. Definitely the epitome of crazy drummers but awesome in his delivery.

John Bonham - Led Zeppelin - Created the sound still craved by hard/heavy rock bands today.

Cozy Powell - Rainbow, E.L.P., Black Sabbath. Ahead of his time and brought a drum single into the top 40

Stephen Perkins - Janes Addiction, **** for Pyros, Hellride. This guy can play anything, enough talent for 6 drummers.

Joey Jordison - Slipknot. Took thrash and speed drumming to stratospheric heights.

Ginger Baker - Cream. Ginger Baker!! enough said.

Nick Mason - Pink Floyd - The best of the prog rock/psychedelia drummers, adaptable and versatile.

Rick Allen - Def Leppard - lost an arm so learned to play with his feet on a custom made kickboard.

Iain Paice - Deep Purple, Whitesnake. Awesome yet subtle power and incredible fills in one of rocks greatest bands.

So there we have it. Now before all the Beatles mafia line up to whack me Ringo was not a rock drummer, Rock and Roll yes and definitely in the top 10 there. Oh and anybody who thinks Charlie Watts should be in there go give your head a wobble.

Reminded of the great Jasper Carrot gag.

"Ringo Starr? Best drummer in the World? He wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles" :)

Quite like your 10. But here are 10 more contenders:-

    Dave Grohl (Nirvana)
    Tommy Lee (Motley Crue)
    Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix)
    Phil Rudd (AC/DC)
    Roger Taylor (Queen)
    Meg White (The White Stripes)
    Travis Barker (Blink-182)
    Mikkey Dee (Motorhead, Scorpions)
    Bill Ward (Sabbath)
    Sly Dunbar (Sly & Robbie)

Think at least 3 or 4 of those merit serious consideration

Think we have to find room for Chad Smith of the Chilis though they are not really "Rock" I suppose.

We must also include Vinnie Colaiuta for his work with Jeff Beck & others, & Steve Gadd for his Clapton stuff.

    @Essexphil

Yes, as long as the 3 or 4 does not include Dave Grohl.

Some great shout outs there guys, all worthy of consideration.

Certainly considered Travis Barker, people don't realise what a great drummer he is.

Also Chad Smith came so close to inclusion, it was a toss up between him and Perkins and so my own personal preference was the only difference.

Collins and Taylor both excellent, Taylor actually made my original shortlist then got bumped. Collins not quite top echelon in my opinion although give his son another decade and he may well be.

Tommy Lee was also under consideration but then I felt that there were so many similar genre drummers that were equally as worthy. Steven Adler and Matt Sorum (both Guns and Roses), Tony Richards (WASP), Alex Van Halen (Van Halen) and Rikki Rocket (Poison) to name but a few.

Dave Grohl, divides opinion unlike any other. Personally I always felt his work with Queens of the Stone Age was far better than his Nirvana stuff but I don't think that as a drummer he makes any top 10 list, unless it's the top 10 drummers who are better on another instrument.

Steve Gadd and Vinnie Colaiuta. Yep good shouts, although I had to google some of their work as I wasn't too familiar with it.

Rick Butler was somebody that I considered along with Topper Headon and even Paul Cook.

Alex Bent would have been on my top 20 can't argue with his name up there.

Bill Ward and Mikki Dee both legends so no probs with those two and to my chagrin I have not really heard enough Hendrix to judge Mitch Mitchell properly. Sorry but Hendrix is to me what Nirvana are to @Tikay10

So to the only one I definitely would not have. Phil Rudd. Now are AC/DC a great band? absolutely. However, to describe Rudd as a great drummer would be like saying Francis Rossi is on a par with Richie Blackmore. AC/DC songs are the simplest to drum to, and I would like to think that with a couple of hours to notate and 9 pieces of kit (bass, hi hat, snare, high tom, mid tom, floor tom, crash cymbal, 12" ride cymbal and 14" ride cymbal) any drummer could play the whole catalogue.

I'm afraid I've never heard of Sly Dunbar but I will fill that gap in my education soon

    Think I've covered everyones suggestions

    Anymore for anymore

Just realised that there are no ladies on the list. Four of them actually made it into my first draft of 50 drummers so just to show that I'm not sexist check out work by the following.

Emily Dolan Davies - The Darkness, Bryan Ferry

Samantha Maloney - Hole, Motley Crue, Eagles of Death Metal

Jess Bowen - The Summer Set

    Denise Dufort - Girlschool

With mentions in dispatches for Cindy Blackman, Jen Ledger, Sheila E and Sandy West.

Phew avoided the P.C. charge there.

    This still has me thinking.

A lot depends on what you think makes a great drummer. The usual suspects always have some unique quality.

But there is also an argument that a great drummer should be the rock around which the rest of the band is built. Because some drummers specialise in making those around them look better.

2 drummers particularly come to mind:-

    1. Lee Kerslake. The drummer with Uriah Heap for donkeys years. Appeared on the first two Ozzy solo albums, before (as everyone seemed to) falling out with Sharon. No coincidence that Ozzy never managed to hit quite the same heights afterwards

    2. Bev Bevan. Best known as drummer for the Move and ELO, when Bill Ward was taken ill, managed to seamlessly fill his role in Sabbath, and has also been Paul Weller's drummer. That's some variety of styles.

PS. I mentioned a Jasper Carrot gag earlier in this thread. 1 of his oldest (pre-fame) friends is Bev Bevan. From playing the drums on Funky Moped (produced by Jeff Lynne) to touring together a few years ago.
