Progress or another tradition lost to so called advancement ?
Wimbledon scraps line judges after 147 years in favour of artificial intelligence.
Wimbledon is replacing its line judges next summer with artificial intelligence in a major break from tradition for the Championships.
Ending 147 years of smart uniformed men and women standing to the back and side of the grass will startle the traditionalists most.
The Hawk-Eye Live system of automated electronic line calling (ELC) will extend across all 18 match courts, including Centre Court.
The All England Club confirmed in an announcement that “officiating technology will be in place for all Championships and qualifying match courts and cover the ‘out’ and ‘fault’ calls that have previously been made by line umpires”.
“We take our responsibility to balance tradition and innovation at Wimbledon very seriously. Line umpires have played a central role in our officiating set-up at the Championships for many decades and we recognise their valuable contribution and thank them for their commitment and service.”
