When this broke yesterday I was intrigued as to how they achieved this. A bit of googling suggested the output signal was hacked to cause the batteries to overheat.

Then with further news became available today, it appears the devices were tampered with and explosives inserted at factory level.

Putting aside the tragedy- this is a remarkable feat of espionage with the logistics involved.

Absolutely.

Has to be a book and a film about it soon. Quite extraordinary, the sort of thing you'd see in a James Bond film & think it's too far-fetched.
