Illegal Delivery Drivers

lucy4lucy4 Member Posts: 8,110
I see these types of posts daily where drivers are found to be working illegally but why are Deliveroo, Just Eat etc not being fined for employing people who shouldn't be working ?

If a restaurant gets raided and they're found to be employing illegal employees they are fined tens of thousands of pounds and possibly putting the restaurant out of business.

Surely to become a delivery person some sort of I.D must be produced before being employed, as well as the appropriate licence/insurance/right to work etc.

This post isn't aimed at the delivery drivers but more at why the big companies continue to get away with employing the said people whilst the small businesses get clobbered with fines.

    My understanding is that it's not quite like that.

    These businesses such as Just Eat & Deliveroo DO only employ those who have passed the vetting process, however, the Drivers then improperly & covertly "sub-contract" or sell their shift to unauthorised/unvetted people. That's where things go wrong.

    Well if you know that then so do Just Eat and Deliveroo. They could easily introduce checks to make sure this doesn't happen but they don't, I would assume because they haven't yet been prosecuted for their part in it.

    That makes sense as to how the 'Illegal drivers' are able to circumnavigate the process, I wonder if the registered account holders are then chased up for 'sub contacting' to others?

    @Enut

    You may well be right.

    I've no idea, I just know it happens.
