More than 450 patients died after being given painkilling drugs at Gosport War Memorial Hospital

A police investigation into hundreds of deaths at a hospital is set to interview a "number of people" about their alleged involvement.

A report found 456 patients died after being given opiates inappropriately at Gosport War Memorial Hospital between 1987 and 2001.

Operation Magenta was launched by police in 2019 to investigate.

Police announced they were proceeding with the interviews at a meeting earlier with the affected families.

A 150-strong team has been carrying out the "most complex and significant investigation of its nature in the country" as it examines the deaths at the hospital.

Investigators have three million separate items to scan, store and review, including 700 patient medical records, and witness statements from more than 1,000 family members.

Gosport hospital deaths: Police corruption probe flawed, watchdog says

A police force has been ordered to review its "insufficient" response to complaints that it was corrupt in the way it investigated the deaths of patients at a scandal-hit hospital.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said complaints from 12 relatives of patients at Gosport War Memorial Hospital had been upheld.

It said Hampshire police should open a new complaints investigation.

A previous inquiry blamed the hospital for the deaths of 456 patients.

They were given powerful painkillers inappropriately between 1987 and 2001, the Gosport Independent Panel found.

The result of the IOPC investigation emerged as four new inquests were opened into the deaths of patients at the hospital.

Police hand files to CPS over hospital drug deaths

Detectives investigating hundreds of deaths at a hospital have started handing files to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

An independent panel previously found 456 patients died after being given opiates inappropriately at Gosport War Memorial Hospital between 1987 and 2001.

Families of those who died have been informed a new criminal investigation, led by Kent Police, has begun sharing files with the CPS for charging consideration.

Operation Magenta, which follows three previous investigations by Hampshire Constabulary that resulted in no prosecutions, has identified 24 suspects over allegations of gross negligence manslaughter and health and safety breaches.

Kent Police Deputy Chief Constable Neil Jerome said the investigation was "one of the largest and most complex of its nature in the history of UK policing".

"It will be the CPS’ decision as to whether or not any criminal charges are brought in relation to these cases," he added.
