Many years ago, neighbours of my in laws; he was deputy chief constable, retired at 44 with a bad knee(ill health) and his pension became more than the salary of his replacement!
He had to be assessed on occasions about his disability which forced the retirement and he took the so called independent assessor kayaking FFS.

Scandalous
I can understand why a bad knee might prevent many PCs doing their job. But a Deputy Chief Constable does not chase criminals/require a significant level of physical fitness.
People who do not understand just how valuable Final Salary Schemes are are totally unaware of the massive value involved in getting added years and/or getting paid early.
I recall advising a Teacher (lovely Final Salary Scheme, but not as good as the police one) who had been shamefully treated. She was expecting a big offer. Was offered £30,000 + making pension via added years up to 65 and paying it now as though she was 65.
She was going to reject the offer. Until I pointed out that the additions etc to the Pension was worth over £300,000.

Which reminds me.
You will hear lots of Heads of Private Schools moaning that VAT will ruin Private Schools. What they do not tell you is this.
It used to be the case that many Teachers wanted to move to Private schools for, among other things, the higher salaries. Lots of Private Schools have opted to no longer be in the Teachers Pension Scheme. Because they do not want to pay the massive cost of contributions.
And Teachers have been voting with their feet. To State Schools and/or Private Schools still investing in their future.
