The right-wing owned media are pushing hard for it. I'd like to think most of the population are not that stupid, short sighted and gullible, but I couldn't be so sure.

Recent history would suggest otherwise.
At the last general election Reform got 600,000 more votes than the Lib Dems, who got 72 seats.

You may well be right.
People distrust Politicians. And so would rather trust a "new broom". One that has precisely zero experience in any form of Government. Or a Party that has precisely zero experience of Govt. With no policies whatsoever.
Seriously-why do people think that someone who has no relevant experience, surrounding himself with similar, would be anything but a total disaster?
One particularly moronic headline highlighted by @HAYSIE recently summed up what is wrong in this country at the moment.
It was a sneering headline, deriding Rachel Reeves for daring to suggest that, if we want to spend more on Defence, we would have to reduce spending on something else.
Why should this be a shock? The Country is no different in this sense than any household. You have income. And a budget for expenditure. You can choose to increase spending on, say, eating out. But only if you either get a pay rise or reduce spending on something else. That's the way real life works.
If we allow the Press to force us all into this imaginary Free Money World, you end up with an ar5ehole like Farage. Who has no plans to increase money raised in tax. While able to criticise any attempts to increase it. Without any alternative. And no costed plans (or indeed any plans) in relation to Expenditure.
Vague "plans" to reduce Immigration. Without any plan as to how, or how much. As an example, we could halve the people coming in on Student Visas. But more than half of our Universities will go bust. You could stop people coming in to our Health Service and our Care Service. Provided you don't mind more people dying and more people dying alone in misery, or more bed blocking in Hospitals.
No need to have plans. Or costings. Just some meaningless "contract" with the people.
We need politicians to be real. But we need to be real too. Not just criticising any attempts to Budget without providing realistic alternatives.
Basically what Phil said. None of the thick morons and snake oil salesmen can credibly answer the question "what would you do?" and "how would you pay for it?". You know when the answer is "hur dur stop the boats", you're talking to a moron.
People want everything sorted right now, but don't want to pay for it. The current demonising of immigrants is just appalling and the average YouTube comments section is full of racist bigots who can't look beyond their own nose. Farage and the mainstream media have polarised this country and turned it toxic.
