    This day last year

"We start today with a bit of deja vu. If you read "This Day last year" (previous post) you'll know that 4 of the 6 Day 3 UKOPS events missed last time round, & last night history repeated itself, with 4 from 6 missing again. Xmas UKOPS are a tough gig for players & site alike it seems.

The evening began with the UKOPS 14 Rebuy, which went to @Natnug. It was worth £1,425 to him, & was his 2nd four-figure score of the Series, as he was runner-up in the Day 2 Main for nearly £2,000. Two wins on the night too, as he won the 6pm £500 BH too. Mr Channing @NChanning has been knocking on the UKOPS door & was 3rd, then later in the evening he ran 5th in UKOPS 18. In 4th was @spearsy136 which was his best score for some time. He has some very useful form in the book let's not forget, including 2nd in a monster-sized Avenger Main during Boomlet which netted him well over £2,000. In 5th was @UnEuropean who surely has the "Most Consistent" Award tied up already, having now made FIVE FT's this series, finishing 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th & 6th. If there's a poker God he'll manage a 1st & a 3rd tonight.

Before we move on, just a quick nod in the direction of the winner @Natnug who will, tomorrow night, be officially crowned "Most successful Sky Poker MTT-er in 2023", the 2nd straight year he'll have finished top. Interesting & very pleasant individual until he gets seated on your table, whereupon he grows horns & becomes seriously unamenable. He really is not at all nice when he has cards in front of him. Not intentional, he can't help it, he's just ferociously competitive. And very good at the pokers.

Next up was the Day 3 Main which fell to @loololollo. Interestingly, as I was just waffling on about "Most profitable MTT-er on Sky Poker in 2023", he'll finish 2nd in that Leaderboard for the 2nd straight year. In fact, how about this for his record in the last 7 years - starting in 2017, he's finished 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd & 2nd. Stunning stuff. If Sky Poker held New Years Honours Lists, he'd surely be a Sir or something. Back to last night's UKOPS Main, quite a surprise in 2nd as @sharp1984 playing for only the 2nd time since May, & single-tabling, ran 2nd for over £1,900, surely a PB. The ever consistent @Fabraclass & @podraic were 3rd & 4th, with @Swog in 6th.

Next up was the £5,000 Mini & there were no shortage of runners here, coming in at a handsome £6,740. @STEAMI was playing for the first time in a fortnight, & made 5 attempts to satellite into the Main, bricking all 5 - only to then go & win the Mini & take home over £1,000. 2nd was @Upswing, his 2nd FT as he ran 4th in UKOPS 11 the previous night. In 4th was @Gambelo has only played a very light schedule this time around, but managed three FT's, finishing 2nd, 3rd & 4th. In 5th was @bakersdoze, this was his third FT of the Series as he'd already managed a 2nd & a 6th.

UKOPS 17, the Mega, went to Mini-specialist @duonross, who was 6th in he Day 2 Main. 2nd was a huge result for @eskie, playing here for only the 8th time in nearly 2 months. 3rd was @Itsover4u who has now had 4 FT finishes in this series, finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 5th. @Angmar2626 was 5th with @mainspring in 6th.

@roddy28 took UKOPS 18, his 2nd win of the Series, in addition to a runner-up spot in UKOPS 10. In the previous Series in November he was 2nd in the Main for north of £6,000. 2nd was @jakescol with @NChanning 5th & @UnEuropean 6th.

There was a wonderful finale to the evening as @River_Fox took the closer. Played almost 12,000 games here & it was not their all-time biggest win, that was a £4k BH back in 2014, but not far off. @ozzieowen was 2nd, @UnEuropean 5th & FI fanatic @peter27 6th.

That's it for today, back tomorrow, same time same place to see who won what in the concluding Day 4."

    Morning.

As was the case last year & the year before, Xmas UKOPS Day 1 was a tough gig for Sky Poker & there was no shortage of overlay again. Liverpool on TV with an 8pm kick off did not help, ditto Man U though that was earlier. More of the same tonight too, and even if we ignore Brighton v Brentford (7.30 kick off) England's most exciting club, Arsenal, are in action on TV with an 8.15 kick off & everyone will no doubt be glued to their TV screens to admire & applaud England's best-Managed PL club.

Last night's Main went to @TONY509 & perhaps it's my imagination, but he always seems to do well at this time of year, & I certainly recall him winning the UKOPS Main in 2022. Been here since 2007 & won everything there is to win, including the Sunday Major numerous times. 2nd was none other than @HAYSIE who plays the game his own way & does not give a jot about the verbal snipers, & for that, I love him. A bit...

In the High Roller there were no surprises in the top 5, with @ILIKE2FISH getting home ahead of @loololollo @Swog @Natnug & @Alvez11 & if you replayed that final another 100 times it's likely that all 5 of them would win it ~20 times, there's really not a great deal between any of them & of course our old friend variance comes into play to randomize things too. An outstanding effort though by @nuff in 6th place, who is more of a cash game player & in his 15 years here has barely played any MTT's, in fact this was only & exactly his 100th MTT here. He did run 2nd in Sheriff the previous night for £340, so maybe he just decided to try & spin it up. He eventually collected ~£800 for his troubles, so it worked out very nicely indeed for him. Going back to our winner, @ILIKE2FISH he's had a very decent December, having already won a Gold Rush Main, an £800 BH & a 7 @ 7, & of course he was with us in Vegas this year. Last night's payday of over £5,000 is way more than double his best previous result, although he's had some lovely scores, winning several Summits & twice runner-up in the Major.

The Mini performed better than almost anything last night, it still missed g'tee but only by a smidge. Was really pleased to see SPT Brighton regular @Chalky666 get home in 1st place, & I'll return to him shortly.

UKOPS Mini winner @Chalky666 completed back-to-back wins by winning UKOPS 05 Mega, a real rarity on UKOPS nights. He's now won three UKOPS events, as he won a UKOPS "Mini Main" in 2018. I won't share the finer details as it's private but in an exchange of DM's recently, he said he intended to take the game more seriously, & I ought to keep an eye on his results. A look at the trajectory of his Sharky graph says it all. A man of his word, & I'm really pleased for him. Two UKOPS wins in a night is super special, especially considering the finalists included @ChipDiddy0 & @Tedson. 2nd was @iGoWaWa (great alias, that) and interestingly, the last time he played on Sky Poker was in the Autumn UKOPS 2 months ago, when he finished close up in 10th place in one of the Minis.

The opener, a Rebuy, fell to @minter123 who has won quite a portfolio of regular scheduled Featured MTT's down the years - Megas, Quickdraws, £1k BH's, MidEx's etc but I don't ever recall him winning a UKOPS before, or indeed any first prize close to £1,150. Much respect to him too for rising above the incessant trolling he was getting in the Chat Box. Quite an interesting evening for the very highly-rated @ChipDiddy0 who somehow managed no less than THREE third places on the night - UKOPS 01, UKOPS 05 & the regular 10pm Turbo. Such is variance, on another night he might have won all three, or failed to make a single FT. I'm guessing he came out in front on the night though, so it's all good.

The admirable & well-rounded @wineli took the Turbo, with 2nd place going to @TIMBER with whom I had such an enjoyable evening at DTD last week. 3rd was the in-form @lwwl who won Predator Main the night before with High Roller winner @ILIKE2FISH 4th.

There was so nearly another double UKOPS winner last night as @wineli won UKOPS 06 & got Heads Up in UKOPS 07 only to run into the Absolute Beast @Tedson who prevailed, & there was a very fine effort by @RogueCell to run 3rd. I'm not sure I can recall a UKOPS in which @Tedson did not clock up at least one victory, he's ridic good &, FWIW, I've never seen him running his mouth in the chat box, he's always polite & respectful. Way to go, man.

That's it for the Day 1 Review. Hopefully traffic will be a little better tonight, but the die is cast & what will be will be.

Starting on Boxing Day when many will still be doing family stuff seemed a strange decision.

Morning Ryan, & I hope that you, Lady Waller & of course your daughter (& current boyfriend?) had a lovely Christmas.

"Strange decision"? On the face of it, perhaps, but there's usually a reason for "strange" decisions, especially when made by usually rational, reliable & well-informed people like Sky James.

As Vinnie Jones famously said in Lock Stock, "it depends on all the elements in the equation...."

So, & to try & keep it brief, the other main element is that if the 4 day UKOPS began on the 27th, it would mean the £30,000 guaranteed UKOPS Main would run on a Monday night. Monday nights are the quietest nights of the week on Sky Poker, Sunday nights the busiest. In addition, we all know by now - or should - that televised football has a monster impact on online poker, & on Monday night the televised game is one of the most attractive matches of the season - Newcastle v Man U. In short, a £30,000 event on Sky Poker on that Monday would have been a disaster.

There is not a shadow of doubt that the £30,000 Main would perform much better (or, less worse) on the Sunday, rather than the Monday. It may still miss guarantee of course, but it will most definitely perform better on the Sunday, I don't think anyone could reasonably argue with that.

That meant, of course, we had a bad Day 1 on Boxing Day. Was the overall effect worse or better doing it that way? Maybe, maybe not, nobody will ever know the answer to that.

Anyway, there you go, rightly or wrongly that's the reason the fessie started on Boxing Day. Looked at that way, the decision is, perhaps, not so strange as it might appear at first sight.

Yeah, fair do's. It was by no means a pop at Sky or James, and it does make sense to have the 30k Main on the Sunday rather than the Monday 👍

Hope you had a good Christmas and have a happy New Year.

Yes, it was a fair question from you, & the reasoning behind the decision was perhaps not immediately obvious.

Thanks Ryan, & a happy new year to you & your fam.

    Hi @Tikay10

My thoughts for what it is worth, for future reference pehaps, is that it could still have started on 27th (A lot of people are still with family on Boxing Day, I know I was)

The main event and HR don't have to be on the final day, so they could have been on the Sunday still with Monday the 30th becoming the final day with MTT's (closers) of smaller guarantees.

Stars often have "Closers" a couple of days after the "Main Event" of their festivals.

    Just a thought.
